The City of Canton, Georgia is the county seat of Cherokee County, Georgia and sits along the Etowah River in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains. Founded in the early 1830s, the area was originally part of the Cherokee Nation before being settled by European-Americans following land redistribution and the removal era. The town was briefly known as Etowah and later renamed Canton in 1834, inspired by the Chinese city of Guangzhou (Canton) with hopes of becoming a center for silk production.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Canton grew as an industrial town, especially with the rise of the Canton Cotton Mills, which helped define the region’s textile economy. The city also became known for its “Canton Denim” and other fabric production, anchoring its role as a small but important manufacturing hub in North Georgia. Like many mill towns, its identity was closely tied to the river, rail lines, and surrounding agricultural communities.

In modern times, Canton, Georgia has transformed into a fast-growing suburban city within the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Downtown Canton features revitalized streets, restaurants, parks, and cultural venues, while new residential developments continue to expand outward. Despite rapid growth, the city retains historic landmarks and its connection to the Etowah River, blending small-town heritage with modern suburban development.
